Teacher Evaluations Decoupled from Student Tests

A number of bills were approved in by the Indiana state government to go into effect on July 1st of this year. There is one bill that went through the General Assembly that hasn’t gotten as much attention as would be expected. This is House Bill 1002.

This was an act to amend the Indiana Code concerning education. Specifically, it removed of points regarding teacher evaluations. Specifically it removed the requirement that teacher evaluates be tied to student achievement. As of July 1st, no longer are teacher evaluates tied to student performance.

I’m sure there are people who will consider this a good thing, and others that will see it as bad. In the end, it is critical for the administration within schools to verify and confirm that teachers are doing the level of job necessary to educate our kids.

House Bill 1002 also does a few other things such makes a few technical corrections and authorizing the state board of education to adopt emergency rules.
